So often I receive emails and letters from people feeling like they're alone in the trials they experience in their business. Uh, think again! There are literally millions who wonder the same thing everyday. "Hype," you say? Oh, yes, there's plenty of it, but just because a business trend has been hyped to death doesn't mean it isn't happening, maybe even faster than you think. Exactly how many are there like us who have joined the ranks of home-based professionals? The statistics stretch all over the board, at best. But, what about a REALLY GOOD estimate in this murky world of home-based frenzy? We'll give 'er a try... First, though the numbers vary, no one, not even the government doubts that fact that the home-based trend is growing tremendously. WHY? For many, home businesses provide more income than the old-fashioned 9 to 5 job. But, more than this, people want a more independent, fulfilling lifestyle than they can get with a "job." Dr. Ben Roach, author and Ph.D. in business management offers, "I believe a home business is an opportunity for the individual to regain autonomy. Instead of making corporations wealthy, we can now become wealthy by putting in the same time and effort at home." Internationally known motivator and author Brian Tracy shares his perspective, "For 25 years, I've been working with some of the most successful men and women in America. Most of them started with home-based businesses. It's one of the surest and fastest roads to financial independence and complete control of one's own destiny a person could possibly ask for." I would add to this the concern of corporate downsizing as well as the "who's raising the children?" syndrome that has so heavily hit the world. Parents are seeing better familial and parenting possibilities since they can now stay home AND earn a living at the same time. Consider this. Link Resources Corporation reports that:
Backing this info up, the IRS reports that, "895 of the people that make over $50,000 a year were the owners of small businesses." Let's take a break from the statistics here. Can you relate with any of this? If not, do you anticipate getting there? I know I certainly do, else why would I put so much time and effort into all this? WHAT ABOUT GROWTH? Well, let's see. This gets a bit tricky because no one really knows for sure how many people have a home-based business. Statistics are taken from tax returns and from surveys, but not all stats account for those who moonlight in a home-based business. (Sources: Business Communications Co., FIND/SVP, ICD/LINK, and The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) 1991 - The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that about 5.5 million of self-employed people worked at home. 1994 - One source claims there were 12,700,000 FULL-TIME home-based workers. Another source estimates it at 14,200,000. 1997 - It is estimated that a total of 43.2 million were working from home. (See the growth so far?) 1998 - It is estimated there were over 60 million home-based workers. 2000 - In 1997, it was projected that 59% of all U.S. working adults would be working from home, either full- or part-time. This is certainly not a phenomenon to be taken lightly. How fast are home-based startups growing? American Demographics Magazine says people are starting home businesses at a rate of 2 million per year. Others say it increases as much as 15% per year. It's probably somewhere in between. WHAT ABOUT LENGTH? How long does the average person remain home-based? Here's an interesting statistic: employee tenure is down 5% since 1996, and the average worker in the U.S. holds 8.6 different jobs from ages 18 to 32. On the other hand, the average independent has been working for his or herself for nearly 8 years. Ironically, the average employment tenure is now under five years. (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics) Hmmm. Would it seem that home-based, independent workers are a bit happier, perhaps even more stable? SUMMING IT UP... While the numbers are surely impressive, what blows me away is the variety of home-based businesses. Everyday we receive feedback and questions from readers of HomeBizBytes or from our website HomeBusinessOnline.com . Just when I think I've seen it all, someone comes up with a new idea. Nevertheless, the business questions and struggles are generally similar. It is truly a variety-rich, growing phenomenon we are a part of.
