I mentioned the AOL-Time Warner merger last week in my ramblings. Boy, did I get an earful. Here are a few of our reader's responses:

Dear Heidi:

I'm with you -- I don't see any good coming out of another consolidation of media power unless you already own a ton of their stock. Our future is evident in Hollywood now, where people who try to create entertainment are blunted by the fact that the networks now own all the production entities and give first priority to keeping their own companies busy, rather than buy the best product around. This week's Newsweek examined this merger in detail and it was chilling to read their editors confess that their objectivity *is* affected when they cover companies in their own corporate family (we knew this, but few journalists admit it). I suppose the one silver lining is that Microsoft (however they emerge from their DOJ problems) will still have competition for total domination.

Donna Schwartz Mills

If Henry Luce or someone with his genius was heading Time Warner we may have small reason for concern. As it is, one could not find a larger group of bland, less innovative, and conservative group of business men. AOL is a Potemkin Village made up of mass mailings of disks to every nook and cranny of America. There are a legion of people who take their disks, use up the 250 free hours and then switch to another one. AOL does not seem to care because this tactic and many others not so obvious inflates their customer base and somehow justifies their stock price. It is a poor service that is being tied to an even poorer journalistic and management machine. Instead of this behemoth narrowing opportunity, it has done the opposite, increased it. Hail to the Merger!

[John continues in a later email]

There was a day when I worked as a financial analyst investigating stock market valuations and I suspect that as many as 20% of the so-called 15 million who use AOL are simply skipping from one free 250 hour CD to the next. I know my son and his friends at Texas A&M think it a great joke and some have up to 20 different accounts all based on the 250 hour freebe. Now, if one multiplies that by a million people doing the same, the entire 15 million vanishes. I do not know one serious user of the internet who relies on AOL. Might be a good question to ask your readers. I think Bill Case has scammed everyone as he turns his truly worthless stock into real money at Time-Warner. If I were in the stock business, I would be telling my people to sell Time-Warner, collect their profits and don't look back.

John Livingston http://youngagain2000.com

John raises some interesting points.
Are the actual number of true subscribers terribly inflated? Do serious internet businesses use AOL?

FOUR JOINT VENTURE STRATEGIES
to Quadruple Your Ezine Subscriber Base
Over the Next Two Months

Occasionally, I come across information and articles that reach out and grab my eyeballs. Something inside of me says, "Yes, that's it!"

Well, what you'll read below is such an article recently written by Dr. Bill Nieporte, a true master of internet marketing.

Remember my Editor's Ramblings in the first issue? I mentioned we were starting our premiere issue with 7,000 subscribers. I've been wanting to tell you how to achieve this. When I saw Bill's article, I realized he outlined some outstanding tactics beautifully. These are strategies we, ourselves, are working on at this very moment. They will make you go, "Ah hah... That's it!"

I'll outline some more tactics that we have used in another article, but first, let Bill tantalize you with his marketing saavy. His ideas will start the wheels in your head spinning something fierce.

Here we go...

Four Joint Venture Strategies to Quadruple
Your Ezine Subscriber Base Over the Next Two Months
by Dr. Bill Nieporte

What would an influx of a several thousand new ezine subscribers do to your profit margin over the next two months? If you've got a worthwhile product and a site that sells, you could easily quadruple your profits!

So how do you build your subscriber base? I want to suggest four Joint Venture strategies that really work. A joint venture is an arrangement where two or more people trade on their resources for the mutual benefit of all. Here's how such marketing strategies might work for ezine publishers.

1. JOINT VENTURE YOUR KNOWLEDGE

Here's a poorly kept secret. If your write content for your ezine and submit it to other editors, many of them will accept it for publication. Fresh and valuable information is a hot commodity for among ezine editors.

In return you (the author) will benefit from having a free resource box of about seven lines to advertise your ezine and/or other product.

Is this strategy productive? Most definitely! Over the last four weeks I have distributed two fresh articles to other ezine editors. At last count these two articles have earned me nearly 500,000 FREE ezine impressions. One ezine contained over 150,000 subscribers. Within six hours after this issue hit the Internet my subscriber count had increased by over 400.

2. JOINT VENTURE YOUR ENTIRE EZINE

Here's a very novel idea that works wonders. Create a "Joint Venture Publishing Partnership" with a fellow ezine. Find an ezine that targets an audience your products are geared to attract. Then propose the deal. Suggest to the editor that you cross publish your ezine to other's lists.

Most shrewd ezine editors will jump at this chance. It will provide them with a brand new audience for their work (and you too). Don't worry--both of you will be especially motivated to make this issue you best ever-- in order to attract more subscribers to your respective list.

3. JOINT VENTURE YOUR SUBSCRIPTION PAGE

Here's another incredible joint venture idea that works wonders. On one of my sites I have joined eight other popular ezine publishers. Whenever a person subscribes to any of these ezines they are immediately transported to a co-opt page that lists all the other ezines in this fraternal relationship. This fantastic little partnership literally doubled the weekly growth of my ezine list.

4. JOINT VENTURE YOUR SUBSCRIBER CONTESTS

Contests are very popular means of attracting traffic to your site. Recently, however, several ezine editors developed a very creative way to use contests to increase their respective subscriber base.

Combined these editors (who publish what I believe are the very best marketing ezine on the Internet) could provide over 100,000 powerful ad impressions for one lucky winner. Their strategy was to create a single page where subscribers to register for the prize by subscribing to each list.

Next they invited webmasters and other ezine editors to advertise their exclusive subscriber site. Those who advertised would automatically be considered for a special weekly contest drawing. This system is one of the best joint venture arrangements I have ever seen. You can check it out at http://www.ezinehits.com/Nieport.htm

*** Note from your editor ***
Okay, now that you've read Bill's article, I'm open for discussion... even open to your joint venture proposals that will "grab my eyeballs" and make me say, "Yes, that's it!" Hmmm.

Tip of the Day
_________________________________________

TURN YOUR INQUIRIES INTO SALES

When someone emails or writes to you about your products or services, be ready to hook them with one of your special offers.

Respond to them with your regular correspondence. If they don't buy, don't stop there. A week later, send them one of your specials. Make the emphasis of your correspondence on your products and services. Remember, they contacted you initially. They are interested in your products. Simply offer them the special.

Sprinkle their name in the correspondence in several places to make it more personal.

Don't forget to set a deadline for your special offer to give them a reason to act now.

If you do not receive results after trying these strategies, then make another offer to sweeten the deal. Be sure to add your deadline again.

If this doesn't work, keep their information in a database for future correspondence. They're probably still interested, they just aren't ready. Give them some time, then try again later.

HumanClick

Talk about customer service. HumanClick is a great independent service that will allow you to chat with those on your website in real time. Let's say someone has a question for you. They see a button on any page of your website, click it for customer service, and you say, "I'm here, how may I help you?" It gives your visitors one click chat access to you or anyone you choose. Java based, it allows you to track visitors, capturing valuable information including what pages they visited on your site, how long they stayed, and whether they visited prior. What a great idea!
