RAMBLINGS...

Well, our series on taxes for your home-based business is over. Phew! Did you get through it? Did it help? If you are new and would like to view this series, just drop me a line and I'll show you where they've been archived.

So, what did you think of last week's article by tax attorney Jim Schneider? Did you visit his site? What do you think of his concepts? I can't seem to get it off my mind. I would really like some feedback from our readers on Jim's article. If you didn't get a chance to read his article, here's the link to last week's archived issue and Jim's article:

There was also an article you may find interesting in Sunday's NY Times newspaper on page 22 entitled "Rules Eased for Home-Office Deductions." Did any of you see this? I would guess you could search this article at their site also.

Please, please send feedback. I read every email.

It's Only Natural

One thing you can depend on is that history will repeat itself. It's an amazing phenomenon. There will always be heroes and villains, empires will rise and fall. New economies will emerge.

With the shaping of each new economy, new business opportunities also emerge. You can depend on it. It never ceases to amaze me how consistent this cycle is.

With this in mind, did you know that building a business at home is only natural? Yes!

Let's take a look at where we've come from and where we are now. You will realize that building a business at home is really nothing more than returning to something familiar.

Here's a little perspective.

We've left the Industrial Age and we've entered the Information Age. No transition here folks, we've definitely left the one behind and have welcomed in the new. The transition has already taken place and the groundwork for the new economy and new business models has already been laid. It is now ours to take advantage of and to mold.

What is the term for this new economy? Hold onto your hats. It's simply called, "The New Economy." Such originality makes my head spin. Yet, it is appropriate for what we are seeing here. New business models have definitely emerged. Look at what the internet has done for business. And, do I dare add to that work-from-home opportunities, both telecommuting and home-based businesses? Absolutely!

Like I said earlier, history has a way of repeating itself, different events, pretty much the same outcome. So, let's take a few steps back and briefly consider one very important aspect for you and me.

During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, merchants set up shop on the main floor of their homes. Family living went on upstairs. This way of mixing personal and business life migrated to America. Many of the critical industries of the beginnings of America were home-based — blacksmithing, silversmithing, glass-making, textiles, farming and agriculture. The family was involved, and children often learned their trades from their parents and grandparents. If you've traveled historic sites of the U.S. as well as other parts of the world, often you will find the remains of these home-based businesses, i.e. Paul Revere's shop (house) for his silversmithing business still stands today.

Urban shops emerged with shops downstairs and family dwellings above or behind the shop. Some of your grandparents may have done this very thing. Interestingly enough, this trend is just beginning to return. Recently, I read about an old, urban apartment complex in San Diego, California, that is being torn down and being replaced with a new shopping center that will have condo-like dwellings above. Biz owners can set up shop below, while their home office is in the same location above. Convenient! Is this concept new?

Let's move from the Middle Ages into the Industrial Age. This era slowly dissipated much of the work-at-home lifestyle. The demand for working in factories and offices drove people from their homes. Automobiles facilitated the move. In fact, it became quite unfashionable to work at home. Thus, the resistance some of us have felt in past years when we tell people we work at home. But, all things will cycle and make a comeback. We are really beginning to feel this now as the media has given home-based professionals favorable exposure. Some people actually feel envious now when we tell them we work from home.

With the advent of the PC, the pendulum has slowly begun to swing back, since around 1980, to the home-based trend. Several visionaries foresaw the return of this trend. Alvin Toffler, in his book The Third Wave, spoke of "electronic cottagers," people who would be working from home with their computers.

This new Information Age with continually advancing technology, has made a new type of business model possible, that of the solo, home-based businesses.

While small firms are actually diminishing, one-person business owners are growing, and rapidly at that. Tax return statistics show that sole proprietorships are steadily growing. Home-based family businesses are also growing. We call this a new business model, but is it really? Just look at history.

Working at home is here to stay for quite some time. In fact, it appeals to the masses as seen by its phenomenal growth. We are simply returning to something familiar. It's as natural as can be.

Only now, with new technologies emerging almost daily, and with such easy access to information, the possibilities are endless.

Do you ever wonder where this growing trend will take your home-based business?

Tip of the Day

Offering Free Shipping and Handling

There's an awful lot of free shipping incentives lately, especially on the internet. You may be tempted to do the same. Just remember, this can kill you if you don't specify geographic limits. The internet is a world-wide medium, and shipping overseas can cut into profits very quickly. So, if you feel that free shipping will help your business, go ahead. Just be sure to specifiy the boundaries, i.e. if you're in the U.S., limit free shipping to U.S. and Canada. As an incentive to buyers from elsewhere, give a dollar discount.
