Editor's Ramblings
_________________________________________
A warm welcome to our 91 new subscribers this week.
I certainly hope you are all enjoying your new year.
You know, 01/01/01 will not come around for another
millennium. I gloated in that fact all day long.
What a wonderful time for renewal of commitment and
for introspection of our businesses as well as our
personal lives.
I don't know about you, but I hate the word
"resolution." Its derivative "resolve" has a very
nice ring to it, but somehow, "resolution" gives me
the creeps. I don't like to hear it. Why?
I guess I've broken my share of new year's resolutions
over the years. Just the sound of the word shoots a
quick pang of guilt as if it carries with it some sort
of judgment.
So, I'm going on strike. I cherish the life the new
year breathes into my goals and determinations. I just
don't like the guilt. So, I'm no longer going to use
that 10-letter word in the new year. How about you?
DON'T FORGET
January 11th is the deadline for you to submit your
ideas for prizes in our forthcoming contest. Thanks
to all who have already sent me their ideas and
preferences. Read on...
I Need Your Help, PLEASE! I've got a problem with the
clutter on my home office desk... I mean a serious
problem. I've been reading up on how to get this
under control and organize my home office and my life.
Phew!
Here's where you come in. In honor of getting my
clutter obsession under control, I'm going to throw a
contest for the rest of my fellow clutter rats. As such,
I need to know what kinds of prizes you would love to
win.
* a specific piece of equipment for your home office?
* some software?
* office furniture or supplies?
* a specific book, eBook or membership?
* some advertising in our ezine, our website or a
combination of other sites and ezines
Your feedback will determine which direction I go with
this contest in the new year. I would appreciate
receiving all feedback by Thursday, January 11th.
Enjoy this issue. Please write and tell me about
yourself. Let me get to know you. I read every email.

_________________________________________ Entrepreneurs Aren't What They Used to Be
...Meet the "New Entrepreneur"
It seems to me there are way too many people starting
businesses from home these days that just aren't
getting it. And, the how-to books they're reading
aren't helping any either.
They have engrained in their minds a picture of what
their businesses should look like — the high stakes,
large risks — all while playing the same game that big
business plays, only on a smaller scale. They read all
they can about entrepreneurship and about how to become
the "Classic" Entrepreneur."
It isn't until they spend some time in their home-based
business that they realize much of the time they spent
learning how to become the "Classic Entrepreneur" was
time wasted, for the most part, and many of the
principles they learned just aren't working.
Why?
It's really quite simple. You see, today's home-based
entrepreneur is a new breed, and one that I am
absolutely passionate about. This new entrepreneur
bears little resemblance to the old breed. And, thank
heavens for that!
Now, before you start throwing tomatoes, I'm not saying
there are not similarities. Today's entrepreneur still
identifies an unfilled market need and then develops a
product to fill that need. With hard work, dedication,
entrepreneurial creativity and leadership, both types
of entrepreneurs build a successful business.
Beyond this, you will begin to see a breakdown between
the classic model and today's entrepreneur.
What's the difference? Well, it is significant, I
assure you.
Here's a hint: it has to do with how each measures
satisfaction.
Let me take you on a journey back through time to give
you some perspective. This little exercise will help
you tremendously to see where you fit into the big
scheme of entrepreneurship. I believe it will also
enable you with more confidence in business decisions
you are making and will make.
~~ "The Classic Entrepreneur" ~~
I don't know who coined the phrase the "Classic
Entrepreneur," but it has been glamorized for years to
describe an individual with seemingly occult qualities
of unfailing dedication, unbridled passion, unwavering
courage, and unparalleled leadership. We want to
believe this "Classic Entrepreneur" is born with these
qualities.
Though truly a child of the industrial revolution, the
"Classic Entrepreneur" has always existed. Take, for
example, knighthood at the end of the thirteenth century.
It has been portrayed as an individual quest for money,
for adventure, and for triumph. Cannot entrepreneurship
also be thought of as a quest? Knights were known to
treasure certain characteristics and values — courage,
dedication, passion and leadership. Does this not
describe the "Classic Entrepreneur?"
But, what drives the "Classic Entrepreneur"...these
innovative risk-takers?
· They enjoy playing the game of business. If they feel
there is potential for a good profit from their
investment, they are willing to take large risks.
To them, accumulating money and business is a conquest
won. They may do this regardless of their personal
interests and will buy businesses simply for the sake
of being in business.
· Money is a scoreboard. The object of their business
is to put money in their pockets with a clear vision
of building a business to sell it for a tidy profit.
Then onto the the next conquest.
· Striking new deals is exciting. They thrive on
wheeling and dealing with like-minded entrepreneurs.
As such, they enjoy making joint ventures and testing
new marketing tactics.
· Creating an efficient administrative and sales machine
is satisfying. They don't work in their businesses,
but hire managers and staff to do it for them. They
the idea generators, the innovators.
The "Classic Entrepreneur" described above is the object
of most how-to books, and, quite frankly, I admit that I
am driven by some of these similar motivators. I excite
at the thought of starting a new business from scratch,
of building it with my own ideas. Alas, it's true, I do
view it as a conquest.
However, there is something critical that sets you and
myself apart from the "Classic Entrepreneur."
In truth, with the resurgence of home-based business,
as was common before the industrial revolution, the
definition of entrepreneur is taking on a new form.
And, as hinted earlier it is being formed by the drives
and motivations of this "New Entrepreneur."
Mark my words, just as we speak of the "Classic
Entrepreneur," someday we will also be using an equal
term describing the "New Entrepreneur." And, you will
be included in this newly-defined group.
~~ "The New Entrepreneur" ~~
So, what is this great divide between the "Classic
Entrepreneur" and the "New Entrepreneur?"
Though some of you may not have previously defined
yourself as an entrepreneur due to the intimidating
stereotype above, you will soon recognize that you
are, indeed, one of this new breed of entrepreneurs.
Let's take a look at what drives these "New
Entrepreneurs."
· First and foremost, they are looking for greater
control and independence in their lives. They want
the work they do to be more meaningful and build a
business around what they love. They believe that
taking control of their own career and income is the
best path to achieve this.
· They are looking for more freedom and choices.
Freedom to work on their own terms and time schedules,
to answer to themselves in business decisions, to
choose who they do business with, to spend more time
with family, to choose where they live without a job
dictating such, to leave the long commutes and sterile
workplace.
· They enjoy life now. Although they have goals for
the future, they want to enjoy the present, including
relationships — business relationships, home life,
their children, friendships. Watching Johnny grow up
and attending his soccer game is more satisfying than
meeting with a client. Getting up early and commuting
ten seconds from their bedroom to their home office in
their pajamas is measurable more enjoyable than facing
a long, contentious commute.
· They have a deep-rooted belief that they can do better
in life. As such, they have a strong determination to
succeed, no matter the obstacles that may come their
way. They believe in and trust their own abilities,
that they can educate themselves with whatever they
need to learn to succeed, that it does not have to be
in-born.
Is this what you are looking for? Do any of these
describe you?
If so, stop reading the wrong kinds of how-to's that
send you off in the direction of the "Classic
Entrepreneur," only to find yourself feeling frustrated
and defeated. Look for those that fit the bill for the
"New Entrepreneur" — from start-up to expanding, from
marketing to building. It will be an ultimately more
satisfying experience for you.
It's not that the "New Entrepreneur" can't be a
"Classic Entrepreneur," it's that he or she doesn't
want to be. What drives him and what he wants out of
life are too extreme. So, don't fight the "New
Entrepreneur." Join him.
Congratulations! You are a member of a growing breed
of entrepreneurs that are taking control of their own
lives.
You are a "New Entrepreneur."

The "New Entrepreneur's" Business Plan
If you fit the description of the "New Entrepreneur,"
it would follow that your plan for your business would
need to fit closely with your lifestyle also.
A new year is a good time to pull out your old
business plan and rethink where you are and what you
would like to change in your plan. A business plan
should always be a living document, especially for the
"New Entrepreneur." Your perspectives may change from
year to year. I can pretty much promise you that if
you haven't read over your business plan within the
past year, reading it over now will spark new ideas
of things you would like to change. This is an
excellent exercise and really should be done at least
once a year.
If you haven't yet written a business plan, do so
now...today. Don't worry about reading books on
business plans that don't have any pertinence to the
"New Entrepreneur." As a start, just jot down some
ideas of what you want for your business and how
you'd like to go about accomplishing it. Don't worry
about making it perfect. Don't worry about the lingo.
And, certainly, don't worry about covering every
heading the books and experts tell you should be
covered. Long, drawn-out, lingo-ridden business
plans are meant for one reason and one reason only:
to sell your business idea to investors. If you're
not trying to impress them at this point in time,
don't make that kind of business plan. After all,
no one else will see this plan but you. So, write
it for yourself.
The below link will take you to an article I wrote
about business plans for the "New Entrepreneur."
Reading it may help you understand what your business
plan really needs.
