Gone With the Click!
What is the web? In its simplest form it is nothing more than a
great big directory. Links are the heart of the directory and
even if you have only one page you most likely have at least
one link. Imagine surfing the internet without links. Without
links you would say to the internet, "Frankly my dear... you
know the rest.
So what's the problem? The problems is when a visitor clicks on
a link, she's gone. She's left your site never to return.
Talk about a Dear John. The link replaces your web page with
the web page of someone else.
We could fix this problem with frames. Have you ever written
frames in html? Besides being somewhat complicated, some
browsers don't support them. Some visitors don't like them.
Frames have there place, but not in this article.
The answer. The Target attribute of the tag. Now don't
leave me yet. I will make this very painless and easy. The
Target attribute allows you to open a new window when a link
is clicked.
A simple tag without the Target tag looks like this:

The above link will replace the current page with the one that
is clicked. With it, the visitor says goodbye to your site.
To fix this problem, we add the following Target tag to our
link:

This link will open a new browser for the clicked link while
keeping your visitor at your site. You don't have to know
html, since most web page editors allow you to specify a TARGET
when you create a link.
Most people don't like new browsers popping open each time a
link is clicked. Can you blame them? If you use
TARGET="_blank", a new window is opened for each and every
link. Annoying! The answer is to use the same TARGET
attribute (or name) every time. It doesn't really matter what
you name the Target as long as it starts with a letter. In the
example above, you would simply use the attribute "window_name"
for each link in which you use the Target tag. Choose
something like the initials of your site or something unique to
your site. Give it a try and let us know what you think.
