POSTING AND LINKING GUIDELINES:
These Forums are open to everyone with Questions and Comments about running their own Businesses from Home.

Posts that really only apply to BIG business or to companies may not be relevant to home-based business owners... and may be deleted.

NO ADVERTISING — please!

We do NOT want to know about your offers or opportunities.
There are specific boards on these forums for those posts. (See the main index — and the rules that apply to them.)

Offending posts will be moderated, moved or deleted. Repeat offenders will be banned.

Do NOT re-post articles from other sites or authors without permission in writing.

You must be able to provide a copy of that permission (or a link to it) on request, or your entire post may be deleted.

If you quote another author or article (with written permission), please be sure to credit the source clearly.

POSTING LINKS — what's acceptable in your post and what's not

You may link to relevant, non-commercial resource sites that support, enhance, expand on or extend the content of your post.

You may include up to three (3) acceptable links in your post, but no more.

No links to commercial sites, except those belonging to the owners of this forum.

*** The exceptions to this are the forums under the category "Forum Members' Offers and Discounts" found at:
    http://www.homebusinessonline.com/community/forum/viewforum.php?f=50
The forums at that link are the only forums dedicated to members' sites and special offers where links of an advertising nature are acceptable, provided that they comply with the rules that apply to those boards. (See the first post on the index board.)

    No links to other forums
except those belonging to the owners of this forum.

No links to squeeze pages or sales pages, paid or free.
If you post them, they'll be deleted or moderated. Do it repeatedly and you'll be banned without notice.

    No affiliate links in posts.
If you post them, they'll be deleted or moderated. This includes cloaked and redirected affiliate links.

No links to unacceptable sites or destinations.
This includes porn, spam, gambling, hate, malware, spyware, adware, warez, political or other types of content prohibited by our terms of use.

    No "pump and jump" posts:
don't post a teaser or promotion intended to jump readers to another linked site or forum except under very unusual circumstances. (Check with a moderator first.)

No telephone numbers or email addresses may be included in posts or signatures.
They will be removed. Repeat offenders will be banned.

SIGNATURE FILES — what's acceptable and what's not

A signature file is the quid pro quo (fair exchange) for contributing to the discussion. The forum owners offer you the chance to promote yourself -- but the emphasis is on FAIR exchange. One line posts, like "I agree" or "there is a lot of useful information here" are generally seen as lame excuses for posting your signature file to get backlinks, and is widely viewed as a form of forum spamming.

Bottom Line: if you're going to post a signature file, at least contribute something worthwhile to the discussion, or risk your post (and signature) being moderated or deleted.

Maximum of 255 characters, including spaces, punctuation and code tags.

[/b]No large font sizes. Be polite... don't shout! Maximum size: 12 pt/px.

No ALL CAPITALS. Again, be polite. Don't shout!

No repeated exclamation (!) or question (?) marks. One is enough. More than one screams "amateur"!

Use color for highlighting ONLY. No signature files with large slabs of bright, garish colors. Use it sparingly.

Affiliate links and commercial site links are allowed in signature files, but NO links to porn, spam, gambling, hate, malware, spyware, adware, warez, political or other types of content prohibited by our terms of use are allowed.

No links to other forums -- it's very bad manners.

Maximum of FOUR (4) lines, including blank lines, in signature files.

No telephone numbers or email addresses may be included in signatures. They will be removed. Repeat offenders will be banned.

WARNING: No faux or pseudo signature files allowed!

These are additions to the main body of a post that are meant to look like genuine signatures.

Sometimes they're posted by inexperienced newcomers who don't know how to create a proper signature. If that's you, read the post below to learn how to do it properly.

Most, however, are sneaky attempts to change the poster's backlinks according to the current topic without having to post a global signature (which needs to be more general because it appears on every post by that person).

Faux or pseudo signatures WILL be deleted on sight and repeat offenders banned.

In response to questions and requests for clarification from forum members, here are some frequently-asked questions and their answers:

QUESTION 1:
For my signature to comply, I understand NO outgoing link to a blog or other site may be included, right?

ANSWER:

This is incorrect. The rules are quite specific:

Affiliate links and commercial site links are allowed in signature files, but NO links to porn, spam, gambling, hate, malware, spyware, adware, warez, political or other types of content prohibited by our terms of use are allowed.

No links to other forums -- it's very bad manners.

QUESTION 2:
Are personal contact details allowed?
(Telephone, email, personal messenger, Skype, etc.)

ANSWER:

No telephone numbers, Skype usernames, email addresses, personal messenger IDs, etc may be posted in either posts or signatures. They're far too open to abuse by predators and parasites. We have a LOT of newcomers to the Internet (and to online business) who visit these forums, and we won't allow blatant scamming, spamming and other abuse of these folks.

The purpose of these forums is to provide help and quality content within the forum itself, not to simply send visitors off-forum to other sites. (See rules about "pump-and-jump" posting.)

There may be occasions where posts are too long, or too personal, to fit within forum limitations. In cases like these, a second post may be added (with a note saying "continued in next post" at the end of the first post and "Continued from previous post" at the start of the second post).

Alternatively, a "continued" link to off-forum resources (free, not paid) may be provided with prior moderator approval, provided it complies with the conditions in the answer to Question 3.

Where more private information or contact is appropriate, the PM feature is available. Please be sure not to abuse this feature. You may NOT use it to promote offers or spam forum members. Offenders will be banned, permanently.

QUESTION 3:
Is offering people access to free training allowed if it means them going to an off-forum site to collect or view it?

ANSWER:

It depends on the individual case. Provided that…

  • the off-forum site provides FREE access to the training or information,
  • without requiring a purchase, a sign-up or other form of personal data collection,
  • the forum post itself is NOT just a "teaser" promotion to "pump-and-jump" viewers to the off-forum site, and
  • the off-forum site complies with our rules and Terms of Service,

there should be no problem.

If in doubt, check with a moderator BEFORE posting. It's a nuisance, I know, and it adds to our own workload, but we've found that anything less than this soon has abusers crawling all over these forums... and visitors leaving in droves.

(There are reasons why Google Bot and Yahoo Bot crawl these forums so frequently — current indications are that they are effectively in permanent residence.)

Yes, there are ways to promote your web site, products or services using these forums — but they require some intelligent thinking, planning and deployment. (And remember... cunning is NEVER a substitute for intelligent.)
