Hi all,
I have started a car accessories business in Toronto few weeks back. But, I have not used much marketing strategies yet. My friend suggested me that direct mail marketing is a good form of promotion. He has recommended me with [moderated] mailing services, [commercial link removed by moderator — please read the forum rules]. I am confused with email marketing and direct mail marketing. Email marketing seems like the cheaper option, but will it be effective enough ? I have heard that direct mail marketing is much more effective for promoting your busines. I need your valuable advices on this.

Are you selling online or running an off-line local shop? If it is a local shop then the best is to promote to local customers via direct mail marketing. You can use flyer distribution and local advertising as well.

In my experience email marketing is not that effective as people see them as spam.

Marketing needs to begin LONG BEFORE you open for business. It should be the very FIRST thing you do, because the first function of marketing is to determine if there is a NEED for what you're offering.

Marketing is an EIGHT-STAGE process. The SELLING stages are 2, 3 and 4. Your planning should include stages 5, 6 and 7 — long before your initial SELLING begins.

Hey, thanks for your replies. It's a local shop, so I am planning to go for direct mail marketing. And may be, I could use flyers too, that's also a great option.

Direct mail marketing is the best ways to promote your business. From my experience, I would say that the direct mail advertising is better than email advertising because it gives the assurance that it will reach your prospects. That is the best way that you can gain more customers. [Commercial link removed — please read the forum rules.]

This kind of over-use of superlatives damages your credibility. Yes, direct mail ADVERTISING is ONE of the best ways to promote your business, but not necessarily THE best way.

Unfortunately, direct mail does NOT give any assurance that it will reach your prospects. You may be lucky enough to rent a mailing list that offers a 90% deliverability guarantee, but you have NO control over the quality or accuracy of any list you rent.

McKinseys — the worlds #1 management consulting firm — estimates the effectiveness of EMAIL advertising at more than 40 times that of Facebook and Twitter combined.

The cost and speed of email advertising are a fraction of that of direct mail.
