Hey everyone, I was enjoying looking at all the random topics of conversation. I backpacked Europe Spring 07. It was an incredible experience, but crazy! We roughed it in many ways which made the trip all the more interesting. I never get to talk about it with anyone except the few friends I went with whom I do not live near...so I was curious to hear about anyone's experiences and perspectives.

who backpacked Europe?

well, the answer is... thousands of Australians. Met some guys in the Balkans this year, two almost 2m tall guys, almost no hair, we chatted about how much we made in our countires. That was a sad convo.

Yep — they don't call Australia "the Lucky Country" without good reason.

We're ranked #53 in the world for population — and our economy is ranked #12, with 23 straight years of economic growth (we were basically untouched by the Global Financial Crisis of 2008).

It helps that we have some ridiculous proportion of the world's minerals and the two biggest mining companies on earth.

A few years ago I flew from Melbourne to Singapore — an 8-hour flight. Four hours of that flight was spent looking down at rust-red desert. That red dirt is almost pure iron ore — the highest quality on the planet.
