Link wheeling might be detectable and frowned upon by google, and they might "sandbox" your site. Or in other words, decrease your rank. This might not be true, but I've been hearing about it on other forums lately.

Same here. (And please understand that these comments are meant for ALL visitors to these forums, not just oakco. That means YOU.)

Any gaming of search engines is gradually becoming targeted, especially by Google.

Jonathan Leger, a very savvy online marketer (original creator of The Seven Dollar Secret script, amongst other clever software and services) saw this coming several years ago, when he released his Three-Way Backlinks service. This uses a large database of member sites to deliver randomised backlinks to your site that virtually defy detection by search engines.

Yes, Google has the capacity, over time, to identify all members of his service and cross reference links between any of them, but at what cost in time, resources and money?

Originality, regular interaction with visitors/fans, fresh content plus a little ingenuity can help you increase your backlinks organically, over time, as well.

The Bottom Line: All search engines really want is to stay in business. That means users have to trust them to deliver the most useful, current, relevant, highest-quality and safest content. (Compare results from 10 years ago with results today.)

SEO is too often all about trying to trick the search engines into delivering traffic to sites that don't always deserve high rankings.

Give Google what it wants and you'll find that it gives you what you deserve. Whether that's good news or bad news is largely down to you.

By the way, this is why we're so tough on SEO spamming on these forums. Post lame or valueless content as an excuse to get a backlink from your signature file and one of three things will happen:

  1. Your signature will be blocked so you get NO link-juice from that post.
  2. Your post may be deleted entirely.
  3. Keep doing it and ALL of your posts and signatures will be deleted and YOU permanently banned from these forums.

We want high rankings from Google and other search engines. That means keeping the standard high when it comes to quality, safe, fresh, original content and minimal SEO spamming. And that's why we enjoy almost permanent presence from Googlebot and other SE spiders.

If you think you can put all that at risk after YEARS of effort, you have a very, very short life expectancy for you, your posts and your signature on these forums.

Thanks for posting. These tips are all helpful for me. In my opinion, quality content is always the key point.
