So what exactly is social media? Social media is the culmination of technologies such as video, pictures, email, instant messaging, status updating and linking into web sites. Web sites such as MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Metacafe, LinkedIn, WordPress, Blogspot and Digg are all examples of social media websites. You have probably heard of at least three of these.

The reason that corporations and even small time marketers are making such a fuss about social media web sites is because of how popular they have become. They also happen to be free to use and flat out work. If you go to Alexa.com, you will find traffic rankings of all the major web sites worldwide and nationwide who have the most visitors. Websites like MySpace, YouTube and Facebook are in the top ten. This means they are getting millions of visitors per day. So as a marketer you can tap into this traffic by having a presence throughout the network of these social media websites.

Many of these web sites allow you to make real connections with people. For example Facebook, a web site growing at an exponential rate, allows you to send emails, instant message, upload videos and pictures, create groups and make friends with other members. Do you see how a connection with another person or business can be made through this web site? YouTube is another good example. YouTube is a video sharing web site that allows you to upload videos up to 10 mins in length. Uploading videos to YouTube allows you to broadcast your particular message to thousands of people in record time.

Do you see the power of social media yet?

Although it sounds confusing, social media optimization is basically generating traffic to your sites through social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and submission sites like Digg. This could mean that you sign up for a Twitter account and you add a Twitter feed on your blog or auto-post your new blog posts on your Twitter page.

It could also mean adding a Digg button on your website to allow your readers to submit the article to the social media community. The way that this works is that if it gets enough digs on the site, it will be featured on the home page or category page and more people will be aware of the article and will come visit your site.

Other social media optimization features could be YouTube, Ning.com, any forums, and blogging communities. The advantages of using these are that you draw more traffic to your website. More traffic to your website may lead to more affiliate sales for you.

Since you are setting up multiple niche websites, you most likely are not using your real name on the sites or not letting people know that you own all these affiliate websites (this is how most people do it).

Social media sites have a lot of members which can improve the traffic of your website. Make sure to maintain high-quality posts and frequent updates of your profile to be able to get more clients and make the website more profitable.

Additionally, it's called "social" because users are able to share similar interests through its wide applications as you said including image, video, bookmarking, and so forth and easily, these people can easily achieve ventures and partnerships through these good relations build by social media.

What's also great in social media is that it stays as casual as possible to cater general interests of people so it's always easy to find your mutual business targets. :)

Hey Joey,

Great article with a lot of good and timely information. I would add that for someone interested in taking advantage of social media as a list building tool, they should focus on just four sites and linking them together. The ones I concentrate on, (although I must confess that I have registered on many more), are FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

Also, when building your list of friends and followers, don’t just go “willy nilly” by going after anyone who agrees to be on your list. Remember, the goal is to build a targeted list of like minded individuals that will be truly interested in what you have to say as well as what you may offer.

Hope this helps!
