Our company had just subscribed to a Webinar service and had scheduled our first webinar. It turned out to be really popular... we had ever 900 registrants! The day of the webinar, we had over 600 attendees, and our presenter's computer refused to show the power point presentation! Our presenter had to call into the alternate conference line, (the microphone and speakers on his machine were not working either!) He covered well by calling it a "webinar for the blind!" Then he proceeded to do his presentation verbally. Part of his presentation was to offer a "web special for the next 12 hours." Then our web hosting site had "an outage" for about 4 hours! I was flooded with emails telling me that they couldn't see the webinar, and that they couldn't get to the web page to get the special... what a nightmare, and all in one night!!!
The best part... we still sold over 100 packages! This is a testament to the value of our information to established Home Based Businesses. although I still kick myself wondering how many more we could have reached had the proverbial 'excrement' had not hit the fan that night!!!

That reminds me of a series of offline small business seminars run by our state's peak professional body for attornies. There were four presenters (I was one) and many major sponsors. The project lasted for five years, with 10 seminars each year.

In the last two years, Microsoft was one of the sponsors, and they presented a 15 minute demonstration of the latest technology at the start of the second half of the program.

For two whole years — 20 presentations in all, to audiences up to 1,000 people per session — they tried to to demonstrate the latest in presentation equipment (data projectors and PowerPoint.

Despite a growing team of technicians flown in from the Australian Head Office (it ended up being about 15-strong by the end), only ONCE did the equipment actually work. And that was in a venue where the lights couldn't be dimmed — so nobody could see the presentation anyway!

It was humiliating for their presentation team, and made the technology a sick joke for nearly 20,000 small business owners.

I followed them each time with an overhead projector and a dozen simple overhead slides.

The contrast couldn't have been more damaging for them or complementary for me.
