Hi my name is Jess I'm new to the forum. I don't have a home or online business yet but I want to start one. And honestly I have no idea where to start. I know the a little about the general products and merchandise I want to sell but not much after that. I'd say I have like a base plan. If anyone has any tips or advice or experience on what I can do itd be greatly appreciated. I was also wondering about the amount of money I need to do any of this. Thanks:)

Hi Jess,

The best place to start is to create a business model, which sounds a lot more complicated than it is. It's a great way to organise your ideas and then flesh them out into simple, clear, practical form using Alexander Cowan's excellent Business Model Canvas:

His site is full of excellent resources, including this section:

Spend time on his site… he's the person who originated the concept and he gives away a LOT of his materials free of charge. (There are a lot of other people and companies using his ideas to create their own implementations that they charge money for — Alexander is the absolute authority, so stick with him is my recommendation.)

That template, when completed, will give you the basis of a really useful business plan. The traditional business plan should be avoided — it's basically only useful as a sales pitch for funding — banks, venture capitalists, investors, etc — and as an emotional 'safety blanket' for nervous lending officers! Trying to use them to actually run a business is typically a frustrating and discouraging exercise in futility.

You might consider to start a blog and write about the products/services
you want to sell, to connect with possible future buyers.
